GIF Sundsvall was affected by bengal chaos during the derby against ÖFK on Friday. The match was won by ÖFK with a 1-0 score in front of over 4,000 spectators. The joy on the stands was great, but the match was also marked by disorderly conduct with thrown bengals and a match suspension.

During the match, a total of 20 bengals were lit on the Sundsvall supporters' stand. Some of these were thrown onto the pitch, causing damage to advertising signs and the artificial turf.

  • It's clear that I'm disappointed. I'd rather talk about the result and joy than about this. But this is important for us to take care of to see what we can do in the future to minimize the risk, says Niclas Lidström, ÖFK's security officer.

Be prepared for the derby

Before the derby, ÖFK strengthened security with double the number of stewards and security personnel, as well as a large police presence. The association claims that the inspections were carried out as thoroughly as the laws allow, but that small bengals can be difficult to detect.

  • We think we did what we could, but still it happened. Then we have to be self-critical and see what we can do in the future, says Niclas Lidström.

A person was turned away

During a pre-match inspection, three pyrotechnic devices were found on a Gif supporter. The person was turned away by the police and risks a longer ban.

GIF Sundsvall is currently 16th in Superettan with 9 points after 18 matches. They have scored 13 goals and conceded 42. They are 29 points behind leaders IFK Norrköping. Their next match is at home against Helsingborg on August 16.
