Students at Sundsvall's gymnasium speak after the Swedish government's school attack commission, initiated following a sword attack in Fagersta. Sixteen-year-old Meyra Andersson, who is in her first year at Hedbergska Gymnasium, says she feels fairly safe but the incident is horrific.
School Safety
The city hall flags are half-mast on Monday. The perpetrator had previously lived in Sundsvall, making the question of school safety even more pressing. In Sundsvall municipality, the outer doors of gymnasiums have been locked for some time, while elementary schools keep doors open.
Government Inquiry
The government announced a "school attack commission" to map and analyse all school attacks in Sweden over the past 15 years. The commission has four tasks: prevent future attacks, stop radicalisation and recruitment for violent acts online, strengthen schools' security work, and improve after-care and crisis support.
Municipal Measures
Recently the municipality began putting up signs around all schools, including kindergartens. The signs state that unauthorised persons are not allowed on the premises when activities are in progress. The aim is to create a safe and secure learning and working environment for children, students and staff.
